BLFL RGB Flood Lights (2-Pack)

Cheap RGB flood lights used as accent lighting in the studio and as a recording indicator.

Lighting RGB Studio

These are cheap off-brand RGB flood lights that are technically meant for outdoor use, but they work perfectly for what I need. One sits on a tripod directly behind my chair, about three feet back, pointed up at the wall. You never see the light itself on camera, just the red glow scattered across the back wall. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on how it looks.

I set the color to red once through the app, then plugged it into a smart outlet so I can turn it on and off with Google Home. Simple.

The second light from the two-pack sits outside my studio on top of the laundry room refrigerator. It’s part of an automation routine: when my studio lights turn on, that one lights up red too. My family knows that if the red light is on out there, I’m recording. Works great as a little recording indicator.

One thing to watch out for with any lighting in a video setup is flicker. Certain frequencies don’t play well on camera, and honestly, these ones aren’t great in that regard. At higher brightnesses they do flicker noticeably. The only reason I’m getting away with it is that the camera never sees the light directly. It’s just picking up the diffused glow off the wall, and at that point it looks fine. If the light were in frame or pointing anywhere near the lens, it would not look good. Something to keep in mind if you’re considering these for on-camera use.
