Herman Miller Embody

Herman Miller Embody

Ergonomic office chair designed for long hours at a desk.

Chair Ergonomics Studio

I bought this around COVID time after going through a yoga ball (terrible idea) and a couple gaming chairs (also terrible). I was doing house renovations and finally decided to just spend the money on a real chair. There was some story around it being on backorder for three months, and I think I ended up getting a discount out of that situation.

The chair itself is great. It’s a $2,000 chair and it feels like it. The seat is comfortable, the ergonomics are solid. But here’s the thing: you have to make sure your desk and chair heights actually line up. I’m 5’7”, and if I set the chair at the ergonomically correct height with my feet flat on the floor and arms at the right angle, the desk is too high. My hands end up underneath it. For a while, I thought my hips were the problem and blamed the chair, but it was really because my legs were at a bad angle due to the desk height mismatch. The chair is not the issue. The ergonomics between your chair and desk need to work together.

That said, I like everything about the Embody. It’s been in my studio for years and it’s held up great.
